Tamarack beach parking changes may be coming

Carlsbad– Well the days of free parking may be coming to an end. TamarackTamarack surf beach or Carlsbad State beach parking lot is one of the last state beach parking lots that is not a pay to park. The state, to help close budget shortfalls, is looking at charging $8 for day parking or $125 for an annual pass.

Parking in this area of Carlsbad has grown increasingly worse with the region’s growth, but Carlsbad also lost parking lots that lined the coast highway between the jetties. They were washed in to the ocean during the El Nino of ‘82 that also wiped out the southern California piers.

VigilucisI know that when we go later in the day during the spring/ summer months to swim and surf, it is frustrating that the lot is always jammed. What truly bothers me is that a local restaurant, Vigilucci’s promotes it as their overflow parking lot. Seems as though the city should have looked a little closer at their parking lot, which is the size of a postage stamp before permitting the business. I am sure the neighbors appreciate it much better than the drink and brawl days of the Sandbar.

The city has asked the state for a 30 day review period, but the city has known for quite awhile this was coming. They actually paid $36,000 annually to the state from 1994 to 2000 to keep the lot free. The state calculates it wold generate approximately $200,000 a year by doing this. Too bad it won’t stay locally and go to our schools!!

Here is more from the San Diego U/T.
